Comments & Suggestions on No.329

by Joe Sung-hoon (Dept. of Polymer Engineering, Senior) 기자2008.11.01 00:00:00

The KNU Times has many sections designed to meet the various preferences of KNU students and edition No.329 did not disappoint us our expectations with its awesome cover design. Despite the excellence of every article in this issue, I am only able to comment on some exceptionally impressive parts of articles, due to lack of space.
First of all, I"d like to mention the article "Milestone or Adverse Effect?" as one of the best articles in edition No.329. Not only has The KNU Times played an important role in dealing with the hot issue of "Unification between two universities," but the article was also objectively written and well-organized article about the issue that I"ve seen. Many controversies relating to this issue have been voiced in on-line communities such as "Kyung-dae World" or "Voice of Bok-hyun," but it has been hard to find information that reflected both side"s opinions. However, the "Cover story" in No.329 not only showed specific instances, but also clarified the beginning and end of the issue. Therefore, I was able to gain increased comprehension of the main problems.
Second, "Traveling in the Novel Toji" was an impressive article for many KNU students, including me. It was a brand-new idea that suggested Hadong as an attractive travel place, in view of its literary background of "Toji." KNU students who read this article could escape from their sophisticated and commonplace lives, and feel the sweet fragrance of the literature"s background. Albamon (www.albamon.com) released the interesting survey result that 47.9% of Korean students read less than two books per a month. This result shows that most Korean students depend on visualized media such as the Internet and movie files rather than books. At this point in time, the article "Traveling in the Novel Toji" was sufficient to make KNU students to realize the importance of reading and it gave us motivation to explore Korean literature.
In the "+You" section of The KNU Times, I thought that the article "To My Junior, Know-how to Be an Exchange Student" was an essential article for many KNU students who tend to be a little bit conservative . Many KNU students want to join the exchange student program, but most of them are not successful, because they don"t know how to prepare for it. Having read this article, I firmly believe that the KNU exchange student program will not only reinforce student"s mental horizon and open their minds , but it can also be a turning point in their lives.
In the "People" section, there was wonderful coverage of Lee Jin-taek. Many students in KNU didn’t know about Lee Jin-teak, even though he is a rare sports star and an outstanding KNU graduate. I"m really looking forward to seeing other important peoples like Lee Jin-taek in this newspaper.
As I mentioned previously, this issue of the newspaper was totally awesome. However, I also want to offer several suggestions for development of The KNU Times.
First of all, one of the few problems of The KNU Times is public relations. For instance, although, many KNU students are affiliated with the "Kyung-dae world," which is the biggest online community site of KNU students, it was really hard to find any kind of notices or events related with The KNU Times in the website. Therefore, connection with online communities like "Kyung-dae world," which is loved by many KNU students, will be useful and efficient for activities such as recruiting and collecting ideas from KNU students. Moreover, this will be also help to enrich sections of the newspaper like "Spot Light".
Secondly, I want to suggest globalization of The KNU Times. This idea can be realized by cooperation with "The International Office of KNU." For instance, introducing The KNU Times to newcomers from many foreign countries at official events such as the "Welcoming ceremony for foreign exchange students" is a good idea. If this is done, many foreign students at KNU will be able to understand more about KNU and Korea, thanks to The KNU Times. Above all, many will remember The KNU Times, even when they return to their hometown. What a wonderful chance to become "The Worldwide KNU Times instead of "The KNU Times of KNU"!
Finally , the most urgent need is for more interest from KNU"s constituents . To do this, as I mentioned previously, methods of continuous communication between staff of The KNU Times and readers are really necessary. In conclusion, this issue of the newspaper is exciting, and I"m already looking forward to No.330.
