Comments & Suggestions on No.331

By Kim, Ji-hyun 기자2009.05.06 00:00:00

First of all, I’m very happy to be selected as an enthusiastic reader. I wanted to write a very specific and detailed review concerning Edition No.331, so I read and thought about it over and over, before putting things down in writing. I hope my opinions can contribute to The KNU Times, even a little. In general, I thought that this edition included many important subjects and issues. But after careful re-reading, I found that there were a number of aspects of the major sections that I would like to comment on.

The first section is ‘Cover story.’ I think the title was very simple and clear, informing readers about the content of the article. The topic was also good too because "National University’s corporatization plan" is very controversial and it affects KNU students directly, relating its tuition fees. In its constitutional aspects, the information was distributed into sections such as "purpose," "pros & cons" and so on. This helped me to understand the information without difficulty. However, I felt that there was not enough information concerning the "Corporatization plan." Even though this topic is important to us, readers need to know about the whole picture so that they can understand the article more comprehensively. Besides, the article took rather a negative point of view. This issue is very controversial and many people have their own opinions about it. It is the responsibility of the newspaper and press to be neutral. Especially, in the "Recommendation for the future" section, the writing appeared to be the reporter’s own opinion. I think it would have been better to give us experts’ or some KNU student’s opinions through various interviews. We were given no successful examples and the article contained only failures of the plan. If it had addressed these points, the article could have been more balanced.

The second part is ‘Hot spot and Gourmet.’ This section is the most popular and useful among students. It tells us about good places, especially cafes and cultural places. I think the best thing in this section is indirect experience. When I read the article, I thought "The reporter seems very passionate." Because when many magazines and newspapers write this kind of article, they write about the places even if they didn’t go and experience it in person. That‘s insincere! But The KNU Times reporters experience the places by themselves and give us various and detailed information. Therefore we can trust the information and it makes people go there by themselves. In this edition, the place was a wine bar and wine is a very popular trend these days. So I think the choice of the place was very appropriate and it attracted many students’ interest. In spite of many good points in this article, I found one thing that was not so good. The Korean words which were written in English were difficult to read. The KNU Times is an English newspaper, but the major readers are KNU students. So I think writing the words in Korean can help readers to read it but overall, this section was really fresh and informative.

The third section is ‘People.’ This section is one of my favorite sections. Every time I read this part, I am surprised, because I didn`t know I had such a great alumnus. In this edition, I was really interested in this section, because, like many students, I want to be a producer. This edition’s person was the KBS producer, Lee Eung-jin, who has made some really famous dramas. I think this section can be really helpful to many KNU students who have the same dream as me. This section can make them motivated, because the interviewees graduated from KNU. So I gained many tips from the article and it really made me confident and motivated.

The last section is ‘Editorial.’ I was impressed by this, because the editor made her mind up to take a positive attitude to the current media issue. I made comments about the ‘Cover story’ earlier for not having a neutral point of view, but I know that this is really difficult. I was the editor of a magazine which was published in the department of my major. At that time, I learned about the issue of being neutral when I wrote the articles and edited the magazine. That experience probably helped me to appreciate this section. I chose the last sentence "The truthful pen is activated by the ink of student’s voices" as the best point of the article. I really hope The KNU Times won’t lose this philosophy and will continue in the same vein, focusing on KNU students" voices and participation.

I have been enjoying The KNU Times for some time as a general reader, like many other students but this is my first experience of reviewing the newspaper. At first, I thought it would be easy for me, because I had previous experience of this kind of work. However, I found that writing and reviewing are totally different though, I was really happy while doing this. Some students will agree with my opinion and others will disagree. In any case, I would be happy if my opinion can have a positive effect. I’m looking forward to reading the next edition of The KNU Times and I hope that I can write more improved opinion about the No. 332 edition.
