|These days, eating healthily is considered more important than eating deliciously. ‘Well Being’ has become an important consideration as people start to care about their body condition more than before. Thus, I would love to introduce to the KNU Times readers some restaurants that serve dishes from Mediterranean countries, and which help people to have healthier bodies. It is well-known that people living in the Cretan islands have less probability of getting cancer and cardiac disorders than other Western people because of their healthy food. Despite the fact that people in the Mediterranean area get 40 percent of the energy they need in a day from fats, they rarely get obese or suffer from hardening of the arteries, and that is because the fats come mostly from olive oil. Since olive oil is monounsaturated fat, it never causes adult diseases, but instead, is positive to health! From now on, let me introduce to you the best restaurants which specialize in Greek, Spanish, and Italian dishes.|
- Gulliver’s Travels
Greek people consider cooking as an art, so they treat cooks as artists. This has resulted in the high quality of Greek food, which is at the foundation of Mediterranean cooking. At Gulliver’s Travels, you can discover Greek food, the original Mediterranean food.
When I visited there, I ordered Santorini Special, and Greek C Salad, which are the most representative Greek dishes. Greek C Salad was served first. It is a salad with fresh vegetables like lettuce, paprika, and tomato. Chunks of Feta Cheese (a cheese made out of mountain goat’s milk, looking like small chunks of tofu.) are topped with olive oil and yogurt dressing. Some say that it tastes better with white wine, but I decided not to try this. Several minutes later, a combination dish of grilled chicken, shrimp, webfoot octopus, and salad came out with fresh pitta [pítə] bread. Finally the awaited Santorini Special was ready. When I asked the waiter about the ingredients of pitta bread, he kindly told me that they are flour, sugar and salt. I was surprised at how those three very normal ingredients could turn into that delicious chewy bread. Now, if the Santorini Special is in front of your eyes, all you have to do is to put some grilled food and salad on the pitta bread and dip it in the sauce called Tzatziki [zædziːkiː]. It feels like eating a very light and healthy pizza. The harmony of seafood, chicken and vegetables allowed me to feel the sunshine and sea breeze one experiences when walking along the beach.
This restaurant is decorated in a very antique and unique style. You can find a lot of old items such as an organ, a public phone, and shelves. What makes the atmosphere more peculiar is a bicycle hanging on the ceiling and a miniature of an old castle. It makes you feel the mood of old times in Europe.
Greek C Salad is 12,000 won and Santorini Special is 16,000 won. You can also find some Mexican food here if you want to try it. Each person can have a cup of tea for free for dessert.
- The Paella [paɪ|elə]
Spanish people are well known for their good taste in food. Not only olive oil and tomatoes but also garlic is used a lot in Spanish cooking. If you thought that all European food is greasy and oily, you should be ready to revise your opinion. Spaniards enjoy rice like most Koreans do. That is, Spanish food would be a good start to people who are reluctant to try European food.
‘The Paella’ is one of the few Spanish restaurants in Daegu. Paella is Spain’s most classic rice food and tastes fairly similar to Korean fried rice. To make it, some rice, olive oil, calm broth, and saffron should be all steamed in a pot with some meat, vegetables, and seafood. This restaurant used to sell two kinds of Paella, Saffron Paella and Ink Squid Paella, but they released Mixed Paella recently in order to help those who do not like strong saffron or the ink squid’s fragrance. I gladly chose the Mixed Paella and decided to order Shrimp Cream Noodle and Quesadillas[kesaðiʝa] together. The main ingredient of the Shrimp Cream Noodle was rice noodles. It looked somewhat greasy when I first saw the dish, but to my surprise, cream and rice noodles blended well together. You could imagine brisk tortillas if you do not know what Quesadillas are. The name originated from ‘queso’ which means ‘cheese’ in Spanish. As its name suggests, there are three kinds of cheese inside it, Monterey Jack, Cheddar, and Parmesan. It went really well with the yogurt cream and tomato salsa that the chef made in person. If you wait after finishing your meal there, you will be served their special desert, homemade ice cream. I tried out three types of ice cream - sweet pumpkin, lemon-ginger, and Guinness ice cream. Guinness ice cream tastes like beer, and I heard it is the most popular among visitors.
All Paellas are 15,000 won each, Shrimp Cream Noodle is 12,500 won and Quessadilla is 11,900 won for one dish and 6,500 won for a half.
Italians often use wine in various ways. They drink it lightly when they have a meal and use it as a sub-ingredient to eliminate the stench of meat and to make the meat tender. The northern and southern parts of Italy have different tastes in food. People in the north like butter and rice a lot while, those in the south love olive oil and pasta. Let me introduce to you the best restaurant to taste Italian food, ‘Cantabile’.
‘Cantabile’ is not located in a bustling area, so if you are visiting for the first time, you might not find it easy to find the restaurant, unless you have a map. In order to enter the restaurant, you have to pass a small garden with leafy trees. When I visited, the weather was so nice that the garden was fantastic and I simply had to take a picture. The overall ambience is quite exclusive, but not too much. With kind waiters and waitresses, you feel well treated.
I ordered one Lunch Special and Spaghetti con Gamberi. The lunch Special allowed me to eat a full course from appetizer, to main dish, to desert. The appetizer includes a button mushroom cuisine that is garnished with some mozzarella cheese and small shrimps, a grilled sweet potato cream soup, and a vegetable salad with cheese that is not salty. It was the first time that I had been moved by food when I tried the two main dishes, Filet Mignon and Gamberi. The medium well-done filet mignon was thick enough to fully taste the opulent aromatic meat juice, and the roasted vegetables made the dish more nutritious. The Spaghetti Con Gamberi is a shrimp pasta roasted with olive oil and tastes a little of the chilly that helps to get rid of its oily taste. My tongue was satisfied while eating the shrimps in the pasta because they were really fat and chewy. One Lunch Special course and one more main dish were enough for two people. After having a meal, you can choose from the dessert menu, including cafe latte and green tea.
Lunch Special is 26,000 won and Spaghetti Con Gamberi is 15,000 won. Courses for Kids are under 10,000 won.
|Do you feel like having a Mediterranean food for today’s lunch? Then look at the maps for the restaurants and do not hesitate to find out how delicious the dishes from the restaurants are. I am sure from my experience that you will enjoy eating this tasty and healthy food.|
