|If you want to recreate yourself, why don’t you leave for Pohang? Pohang is not far from Daegu, so don’t hesitate. If you want to see winter sea and mountain, Pohang is the most appropriate as the destination. Pohang, located in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, is a main seaport in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. The built-up area of Pohang is located at the alluvium of the mouth of the Hyeongsan River. The city is divided into two wards, Buk-gu and Nam-gu.|
Since I did not see rising sun in 1st January 2012 and have not gone somewhere, I wanted to have an outing, eat many delicious foods, and write this story. I went for the effect of killing three birds with one stone. I had a day trip, but I tried to organize a meaningful itinerary. I departed from home early by car at 6A.M.
>Transportation : Take Bus number 101 or 105 at Pohang Station.
- 07:11A.M. : Hwanho Sunrise Park
I arrived at my first destination, Hwanho Sunrise Park. Reaching to the top of low knoll, I could see Pohang sea and POSCO factory at one view. I have seen many sunrise, but I have not seen one without any clouds and fog as clear as today. In addition, I felt awesome to see POSCO factory next to the rising sun. As I saw the red sunrise, I prayed that everyone who I know would be healthy this year and everything that I do goes well. There were many additional facilities such as a small zoo, Pohang Museum of Steel Art, sports facilities for resident. Above all, Hwanho Sunrise Park was in a good boardwalk. Although I went there in winter, there were not many people. However, when spring and summer come, there are many families and couples to go for picnic. Despite cold weather, there were various animals in small zoo like deer, ostriches, rabbits, and Japanese monkey. When I went to the Pohang Museum of Steel Art, it was closed. So, I could not go within, but there were fabulous sculptures outside. After sightseeing attractions, I had breakfast in the car. My breakfast was instant cup-ramen. I had never felt cup-ramen could be delicious food to eat that day.
> From Hwanho Sunrise Park to Naeyeon Mountain it took about 50 minutes by car.
> Transportation : Take Bus number 500 at Pohang station.
- 10:04A.M. : Bogyeong Temple in Naeyeon Mountain
I arrived in Mountain Naeyeon. Before going to Pohang, I found some information about Pohang on the Internet. When I searched the Mt. Naeyeon, I thought that I will go there and I was especially looking forward to seeing the scenery. According to the Internet, in Mt. Naeyeon, there are twelve picturesque waterfalls, cliffs, layered walls, and fantastic rocks and stones exist along with bent pine trees. In addition, because I have not been winter mountain and waterfall, I had great an expectation naturally. The Mt. Naeyeon’s trail was not so steep and dangerous. Mountain’s trail was made of wood and stone stairs, so I stepped on the ground easily. Although I was tired, I forgot all the exhaustion, when I saw an enormous waterfall. Finding waterfalls that were hid by the mountain was very an exciting experience to me. The scenery that waterfalls were frozen partially at night and the rest part was melted during day time made great spectacles. Once I climbed route connected to the waterway and 1.5km after passing Bogyeongsa, Ssangsaeng Waterfall, the first waterfall, appeared. Even though the waterfall was not that magnificent, the shape of the two waterways falling from both sides was very elegant. Passing the waterfall, I could see Bohyeon Waterfall (the second waterfall), Sambo Waterfall (the third waterfall), Jamryong Waterfall (the fourth waterfall), and Mubong Waterfall (the fifth waterfall). The most beautiful scenery among the 12 waterfalls of Cheongha Velly could be seen from the vicinity of Gwaneum Waterfall (the sixth waterfall) and Yeonsan Waterfall (the seventh waterfall). Next to a pond created by water from the waterfalls, a large cave existed. It is said that as you enter the cave, you can see the falling watercourse of the waterfalls which blocks one entrance. Once I passed the viaduct over Gwanem Waterfall, the grand appearance of Yeonsan spectacle of a big watercourse falling beside a steep cliff called Haksodae was exciting to me. Even though I only saw seven waterfalls of twelve waterfalls, I think that Yeonsan waterfall was the best among all waterfalls. It took a great deal of time to climb the mountain for seeing just seven waterfalls. It took about 2 hours. Bogyeong Temple was a quiet and little temple, but it seemed to have a long and unique history. Frankly, I was so hungry that I could not look around well.
-Ocheungseoktap(Five-story stone pagoda) at Bogyeongsa
This five-meter-tall five-story pagoda was built during the Goryeo Dynasty. It is called “geumdangtap” because it is located in front of the Jeokgwangjeon main hall. According to Bogyeongsageumdangtapgi, this was built by Doin, Gakin, and Monwon in 1023. The foundation stone comprising four stories, and the two supporting stones four the foundation were newly substituted. When the pagoda was restored in 1976, the 4th, 5th body stones and the 5th roof stone were replaced.
-Daeungjeon of Bogyeongsa : Gyeongsang province cultural Property Material number 231.
This building was rebuilt in 1677, the 3rd year of Joseon King Sunkjong. Later it was repaired several times. Among the many repairs, the large scale renovation was made in 1932. The Buddha triad is enshrined in the main hall, and the upper part of the alter was decorated with the jeweled cover.
>From Mt. Naeyeon to the Juckdo Market, it took about 40min by car
>Transportation : Take Bus number 510 at Bogyeongsa
>Admission Fees : Bogyeong Temple: Adult -2,500 won, teen-20,00 won
It was a long-awaited lunch time! Pohang Jukdo Market first started as a small gathering of local vendors who sold their wares at the large fields of reeds in Pohang Inner Harbor. Now, over five decades later, the market has become one of the largest traditional markets in the Gyeongsang province. The largest open-run and the seafood wholesale market, in the east consist of 200 raw fish stores, offering the area’s best catches. Nearby restaurants sell sashimi dishes at incredibly low prices and in the wintertime visitors can get a taste of Gwamegi, a local specialty of the Pohang area. There were many stores and different types of fish, so I could not easily choose a restaurant. Finally I also ate sashimi and felt the taste of origin. Chelon haematocheilus(Milchi) was one of the most delicious sashimi I have ever tried. It has unique tastes that I have never tried. Fortunately, I saw merchants sell by auction many crabs, I could not understand what they were talking each other.
After lunch, I went here and there around a coast road. Coast road looked like Haeundae in Busan, but Pohang’s sandy beach was cleaner than Busan. Around coast road, there were many cafes, and I could see Pohang coast at a glance there. The feeling that one can get when drinking coffee while looking at the sea is beyond the imagination of anyone who has not experienced.
As it was a bit dark outside, POSCO factory was turned on the light. It was very beautiful and it was unlike a general image of steel mill, I felt like looking at the design of the Artwork. Night view of Pohang is one of the sources of pride which is the sea and light of POSCO.
I felt refreshed to see an expansive Winter Sea and Mountain views. Pohang is not far from Daegu and after the opening Daegu~Pohang Expressway, which will take an hour between two cities, so you can easily go. One of my biggest regrets in Pohang tour is not paying a visit of inspection to a POSCO. I am sure that Pohang is a good city that has nice seascapes, mountain sceneries, and nightscapes. Why don’t you go off to Pohang for distraction from the stress?
