Jasmine Blossomed; Tunisia Enacted a Democratic Constitution

Tunisia, which triggered the Arab Spring on December, 2010, finally established a new constitution on January 26th, 2014. 200 members of parliament voted in favor of the constitution, 12 were against it, and 4 abstained. This constitution enhanced the freedom of religion and gender equality, and was recognized as most progressive by other Arab countries. Since Tunisia overthrew its dictatorship and elected the Constitutional National Assembly in 2011, it has gone through political chaos due to religional conflicts and financial difficulties over the last two years. Secularists, supporting liberalism, and orthodox Muslims, who had previously remained intransigent, reached a compromise in the end. In contrast with the bad situations of other Arab nations such as Egypt and Syria, which are still in conflict, Tunisia has shown hope for a positive end to the Arab Spring.

Dispute between Peru and Chile is Unsettled

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has fixed the maritime border between the Republic of Peru and the Republic of Chile. The two neighbors have been in conflict since 2008 over the maritime boundary, and now Peru has won the battle to secure it. The disputed sea area between the two countries is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world and measures 38,000 square kilometers, producing a value of 200 million US dollars in revenue a year. However, it seems that the dispute is not over. Chile and Peru have been laying claims of originality over the drink ‘pisco.’ Chile insists its originality for their native word ‘pishku’, while Peru claims its originality for the word which means a bird, derived from the Inca Empire. This problem will probably be tackled by World Trade Organization.

China Needs Quick Improvements in Diplomatic Relations with Japan

There has been a rumor of a possibility of war between China and Japan due to the conflict over the possession of Senkaku Island and the visit of Japanese Prime Minister, Abe Shinzo to Yasukuni. The chief general of China said that they have more power than Japan in the conduct of war regarding land area and a greater characteristic of endurance. Therefore, he believed that if war breaks out, China would win the war easily. He repeated that their missiles are aimed at Japan and China would control Japan with the superiority of their missiles. As an extension of the criticism against Japan, China has decided to double the space given to the Nanjing Massacre in its Museum..

On the other hand, Abe Shinzo compared the state of tension to that of the England and Germany just before World War I, which means that war might break out suddenly. He made an additional remark that the preparation of armaments in China is useless in every aspect. Moreover, he said he cannot accept any behavior on the part of China in terms of trying to change the situation through power, and he claimed responsibility for keeping Japanese citizens, land, and territorial waters safe. However, treaties like the peace treaty between the two countries should help to prevent the worst situation ocurring.
