352. Three minds for a global leader

Three minds for a global leader

Globalization is defined as all those processes where the people of the world are incorporated into a multicultural world society, and is a key strategy for all universities worldwide. So I really want to encourage college students to do their best to become leaders in a globalized era.

When it comes to cultivating a global perspective, some people born in polyglot nations, or children of expats or diplomats have an advantage. An of this is a professor of the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia who, I know, grew up speaking five languages, while I like many Koreans, only spoke one. But I, as former vice-president for international affairs in KNU, think that if you incubate the following minds, you can make yourself into a global leader whatever your goal is

1. International Mind: Since we live in an age in which we work together with foreigners, and a lot of people have international marriages, the best way to live with and understand other people is to speak their language. So a good command of English is a powerful tool as a leader. Further, it’s desirable to learn our neighbors’ languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Russian, and so on. Don’t postpone studying foreign languages anymore.

2. Professional Mind: When I was college student, a college diploma was sufficient to get a job. But nowadays, you need to verify that you have sufficient capability to do what the company needs. Therefore, you have better spend time and invest money on what you are interested in, and be capable of accomplishing what our current and future society needs. That is the reason why you are majoring a subject in university.

3. Local Mind: To act as locally as possible is just as important as acting as internationally as possible. So since a Korean-American person is usually called ‘Korean’ even if he lives in America for a long time, it is very important for us to keep and develop our good local habits. One thing I find is that Koreans are very thoughtful of others. Therefore wherever you live, if you live as a real Korean you are the best leader in your society.

Becoming a global leader doesn’t happen without effort. But if you are good at foreign languages, have a specialty with which you can work out what our society needs, and act like real good Korean, you will be really a leader in our society. Don’t hesitate to cultivate 3 global minds as much as possible.
