Colorful Lights, Colorful Attractions, Cheong-do
By Lee, Young-sun, Reporter
How clear the sky is! How fresh the wind is! Autumn gives us wonderful weather for going on a trip. If you want to go somewhere, but hesitate to leave far away from Daegu during the semester, here is a recommendable place, “Cheong-do.” When students think of Cheong-do, most of them may recall the “Bullfighting Festival.” However, there are also beautiful sightseeing places. Here are some places that I visited on the weekend.
I went there by car. I departed from Daegu around 5 pm, because the Provence Photo Land turns on after the sunset. Before visiting the Provence Photo Land, I stopped by Wine Tunnel.
* Wine Tunnel
The wine Tunnel is a persimmon wine experience hall. It was a railway tunnel of the Kyungbu-line, but rail services were discontinued because of its long lengthy slope. Recently, it was reconstructed as a good sightseeing spot where wines are stored and ripen. People can drink different kinds of wines at the cafe in the tunnel. Sometimes different kinds of exhibitions are held; when I visited, there was a Korea Fine Art Association Special Invitation Exhibit. It was dark, but colorful lights made the place fascinating and atmospheric.
The entrance fee is free, but you have to pay 2,000 won (per adult) to see a specific exhibition section. The tunnel is cooler than outside, so it will be nice to visit here during the summer to avoid the heat. It was impressive that the tunnel was changed from an abandoned and old facility into a representative tourist attraction of the region. While trying wine in a tranquil mood, look around the exhibition and take pictures. It can be a chance for you to take a rest.
* Provence Light Festival
When I was about to leave the Wine Tunnel, it was just the time that the Provence Photo Land turned the lights on. The Provence Photo Land is near the wine tunnel. It is a theme park that replicates the Provence town located in the south-east of France. The Provence Light Festival is held 365 days a year. During the daytime, you can enjoy the neat houses and cute props. How charming they are! Women must like those decorations that let them feel like they are in a fairy tale story. When the sun sets and the lights turn on, you can see an amazingly fantastic world: Love Road, Cupid Road, Propose Road, Mirror Maze, Provence Forest, Provence Village and so forth. As you can guess from the names, it is a romantic place for couples to date. You can make a beautiful memory with your family or friends, too. Everywhere you see around you is a great spot to take pictures. There are also some restaurants and amusement rides: a bumper car, mini biking, and a little train. Sometimes you can catch the show on the stage. On weekdays and Sundays, it opens from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm. You should enter before 10:00 pm. On Saturdays, it is available from 10:30 am to 11:30 pm. It opens all year round; even on rainy days. Entrance fee is 6,000 won for one adult.
* Yongam Spa
Yongam Spa is close to the Provence Photo Land. It is famous for its natural mineral water which stems from an underground 1,008 meter basement. It is remodeled, so you can enjoy bathing in the hot springs with modern facilities. Actually, I went there after looking around the Provence Photo Land, but there was no room available. If you want to stay overnight, I suggest you to make a reservation the day before. For hot spring and bathing, the fee is 9,000 won on weekdays, and 10,000 won on weekends. When you want to stay in a room, it is 90,000 won on weekdays, and 120,000 won on weekends. You can get a discount if you register with a family membership.
Other Attractions of Cheong-do?
If you travel by car, it is easier to go to other places far from Provence: Laughter Health Center (Cholgabang Theater), Unmunsa Temple, Unmunsan Natural Recreation Forest, Cheongdoeupseong Fortress, etc.
In addition, Kimbap is popular in Cheong-do. In front of the Cheong-do station, you can see the famous Kimbap stores, Halmaekimbap and Chorongkimbap. The ingredients are not very special, but the taste is delicious.
How to go (Public transportation)
By train: Daegu station → Cheong-do station
After coming out of the exit, go to the left around 200m, you can arrive at the Cheong-do bus station.
By bus: Number 7 or 2 → Get off at the stop “Samsin 1-ri”
After getting off the bus, there will be a sign notifying the direction.
On foot: Walk following the signs. It takes around 25 minutes.
If you do not like walking, you can take a taxi at the taxi stop in front of the bus stop. It takes 15 minutes and the fare is about 7,500 won.
As Cheong-do is not far from Daegu, you can enjoy a day trip or one night stay-over trip relatively inexpensively. With its colorful lights and colorful attractions, traveling to Cheong-do will be an unforgettable memory for family, friends or a couple. How about going on a trip to “Cheong-do” on the weekend after the mid-term exams?
