360. Readers with Critical Thinking

Yoon, Ji-young 기자2015.11.24 20:46:54

The advent of smartphones has made it possible for people to be constantly exposed to news anytime and anywhere. Obtaining information has become easier than ever, but readers need to be critical in what they understand from their gatherings. As most media often give out articles without sufficient explanation or background information, the contents should be thoroughly interpreted via critical thinking.

Nowadays, many media, such as SNS, appeal to audience with sensual images or emotional titles. However, judging an event with rationality is impossible if the historical and social backgrounds are not presented. For example, the ‘picture of Aylan’ aroused sympathy around the world for the refugees of Syria. The public expressed favor for Germany and hostility for Hungary respectively because they showed different reactions to accommodating the refugees. Such stances are not appropriate when considering the different economic and religious situations of those countries.

Critical thinking also helps to prevent an argument turning into a mere emotional opinion contest by reflecting if any of the faults lie in oneself. The word “Npo generation(N포세대)” includes the word ‘po’ meaning ‘to choose to give up’, resulting in the older generation considering that the younger generation lacks perseverance. The younger generation criticizes the rigidness in the social status where the older generation refuses changes. However, they should reflect whether they have not given up their portion of the ‘pie’ or whether they have too high expectations in the job market.

Thus, critical thinking seems to be essential not only in writing but also in reading articles. Indiscriminate exposure to the mass media will be likely to lead to unreasonable dichotomy. The readers should not be tempted by the provocative images and titles, nor emotional fights among those without sufficient evidence for their arguments. The KNU Times no.360 hopes to give the readers insight for some of the current issues through critical thinking
