360. A Guide to Vegeterian

These days, many people are interested in being vegetarians and there are even vegetarian celebrities like Lee Hyo-ri and Song Il-guk. Many non-vegetarians think vegetarians only eat vegetables and fruits, but there are many types of vegetarians. Vegans only eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grains. They exclude all animal flesh and by-products, such as eggs, milk, and honey. Lacto-vegetarians add milk and dairy products in their range of edible foods. Ovo-vegetarians eat eggs but not milk, and ovo-lacto vegetarians eat all animal by-products. If any vegetarians had been having difficulties in finding vegetarian foods, the following foods will be good options.


Foods for Ovo-vegetarians


Banh-mi Egg Sandwich

Banh-mi Rico, a cafeteria located near the north gate of Kyungpook National University (KNU), sells Vietnamese style sandwiches and coffee. Sandwiches in this cafeteria are provided with fried potatoes and a small amount of pickles. Banh-mi is a Vietnamese style baguette made from rice. The Vietnamese could have simply eaten rice, but they made baguettes from rice because they were influenced by their French ex-colony experience. Spicy seasonings, and cilantro with a strong scent, which are unique features of Vietnamese foods, are mixed harmoniously with baguettes and make a unique flavor. You can order black coffee which has a more bitter taste, or Vietnamese style condensed milk coffee which has a deeper and sweeter flavor. Noodles with Vegetables (쟁반국수)

As the name of this food tells us, it has buckwheat noodles with fresh vegetables. It also includes half an egg and spicy sauce with sesame seeds. This food is quite spicy, so you should consider choosing other dishes if you cannot eat spicy foods. Additionally, this cold and fresh noodle will be good for vegans if you order it without egg. If you are worried about the red sauce splattering on your clothes, you should ask a waiter for an apron. You can also find this restaurant near the north gate of KNU.

Bulgui Dupbap(불구이 덮밥)

This food provides rice, bulgogi made from soybeans, and four side dishes only for 6000won. The most unique feature of the dish is that it includes meat made of soybeans. Protein is a nutrition which is easily lacking in vegan meals, so it would be helpful for vegans to eat lots of soybeans to have balanced meals. Soybean meat tastes like soft fish cake, which is a very unique flavor. Muk with sweet seasonings, potatoes, kimchi, and watery soup with black pepper are provided as side dishes.  Loving Hut is a 100% vegan restaurant, which is rare in Korea. It sells meals and desserts such as coffee, tea, and vegan ice creams which are made of 100% natural vegetarian organic ingredients and processed foods for vegans like meats made of soybeans, veggie-burger, and soybean milk. The School cafeteria in the College of Engineering sells Korean the traditional food bibimbap, including fresh vegetables and tasty doenjang stew with tofu. Vegetables in this bibimbap are bean sprouts, sliced carrots, lettuce, and zucchini. The fresh and light flavor of these vegetables can stimulate your appetite. Sesame oil and seasoned sea laver make this food even more delectable. Furthermore, you should taste this famous doenjang stew which has a deep and rich flavor. Bean sprouts are known as hangover remedies. Additionally, vitamins and iodine in the vegetables and sea laver will make you healthier.
