361. More than just a Donation

Mun, Yu-jeong 기자2016.03.02 00:00:00

Is forced volunteering work helping anyone? Korean students are obligated to do 60 hours of volunteer work in their high schools. Also, it is common to see that university students just do volunteering work to build up their career. Volunteering can be considered as meeting mandatory community service requirements for some students while it remains a pleasant memory for others. Compulsion for volunteering poisoned some students’ minds to think the activities are boring and quite hard. However, these days, there are special volunteer activities that trigger interest and utilize talents. The following skill based volunteering and talent donations have come into the spotlight in Kyungpook National University (KNU) : D.R.O.P, GAT Dutch, and Jiyong X Jinhee.

D.R.O.P
D.R.O.P (Donating and Running is Our Passion) is a volunteer group of people who are fond of running
and donate the money in proportion to running distances. This group aims to spread the donation culture throughout Korea where people can actively donate even small amounts of money in an effort to share it with others. Meetings for running are usually held on Wednesdays at a playground in KNU, but this can be changed depending on situations. The amount of money is calculated at 400 won per 1km and running courses are divided into 3km and 5km. The raised funds are contributed to Hanna’s Dog Shelter and Sponsoring Unions for Police Officers and Fire Fighters. Furthermore, D.R.O.P visits these places to give thanks to them and do volunteer work. In this respect, the running donation of D.R.O.P kills two birds with one stone where running helps people to stay healthy and shows what the true meaning of donating is.

GAT Dutch
GAT Dutch (Give And Take Dutch) is a Dutch coffee charity group with talent donations, hoping that people are Glad Any Time with Dutch. At first, this group thought about sharing when it sold Dutch coffee at a low price for students and started sharing in earnest with the financial support from senior, Park, Cheolsang (KNU Times NO.358). As a result, a lot of events such as a free snack bar, Seomun festival and flea market were provided for students with the participation of talent donors in making posters, filming and planning programs. Furthermore, Cafe KOZHA and Cafe GAT Dutch are run with assistance from seniors and talent donors to create a better environment, offering free Chinese language lessons for students. Parts of the proceeds will go to a Bokhyeon scholarship and be put into making more opportunities for displaying abilities. GAT Dutch endeavor to make the small action of sharing be back to back and become a larger circulation of donation.

Jiyong X Jinhee
Jiyong X Jinhee, named after the lovers respectively, is a couple who have been active in clothing donations. This couple is a good example of bringing out their own abilities and aptitudes, Jiyong engaging in clothing businesses and Jin-hee majoring in Fashion Design. They are willing to help people in need through displaying their abilities. 60 handmade mufflers and 30 socks were donated to school guards, cleaners and Daehyeon fire fighters in charge of the safety for the local community at the end of last year. Jiyong X Jinhee draws up the current plans with D.R.O.P and GAT Dutch to distribute warm gloves and stew packs to people working for KNU on cold days. It is a desire of Jiyong X Jinhee to help neighbors take a step toward a heart-warming society through talent donations.

Volunteer work means not giving a hand blindly but being mutually beneficial through sharing. Talent donors say that talent donation makes them realize how their life is valuable, boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Likewise, the true meaning of volunteering doubles if you find what you are interested in and where your abilities are required. What about starting your real donation?
