362. Unknown Aspects of KNU Alumni

Lee, Yu-jeang 기자2016.06.18 03:31:55

When one thinks of a school reunion, in general, one only considers it as a meeting to promote old friendships. However, Kyungpook National University (KNU) alumni’s work includes not only promoting friendship, but supervising cultural events and managing the Hyoseok Scholarship Foundation. Therefore, it will be good to find out about the unfamiliar aspects of the KNU alumni that you could benefit from.

Cultural Events

The KNU alumni hold cultural events four times a year: 1) a New Year’s concert, a Day of KNU’s events; 2) distribution of discounted tickets for the Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMP) and 3) a free watching event of a Samsung Lions home ground game, and 4) a mountain climbing contest. The New Year’s concert is held in mid-January, and the rest of the events are held in the second half of the year.

The 2016 New Year’s concert was held in the main auditorium of KNU. For anyone who wants to watch this classical concert, you need to apply on the KNU homepage and win the lottery. This year, at the 9th New Year’s concert, the international maestro Geum, Nan-sae conducted the Daegu International Opera Orchestra. Once a Year, students and alumni can purchase DIMP musical tickets for a cheaper price. In 2014, students and alumni watched the musical Mata Hari in the Suseong Artpia, and in 2015, they watched Turandot in the Daegu Opera House. A free watching event of a baseball game is especially popular among students. In this event, you can watch a Samsung Lions home ground game, and if you are lucky enough, you can get a raffle prize from the giveaway event. Mountain climbing is the biggest event held by the KNU alumni, and this event is hosted on the second Saturday of October every year. It consists of two parts: part 1, time for hiking, part 2, invited performers play, a talent show and a prize draw. In 2014, the mountain climbing event was held on Mungyeong Saejae, and in 2015, it was held on Buseoksa Temple and Sobaek Mountain in Yeongju.

Scholarship

The Hyoseok Scholarship was founded by Cho, Un-hae, the former president of KNU alumni, with 13 hundred million won funding. This institution has presented 15 hundred million won in scholarships to 935 students since 1995. It selects students from each college and provides their tuition fees for the second semester. The scholarship bestowal ceremony is held in mid-August every year. The Hyoseok Scholarship Committee selects students from among those who paid the KNU alumni association enrollment fee and who can attend the scholarship bestowal ceremony if possible. The committee sends a notice expressing these standards to the KNU Student Affairs office. Next, the Student Affairs office adds one more standard - that students with difficult family circumstances can get more chances to receive the scholarship. Finally, each college chooses students who will receive the scholarship.

Students could think of the KNU alumni as something not related to them. However, once you enter KNU, you have become a member of this institution. Additionally, it holds many cultural events for students and alumni. How about considering this organization and participating in the events next time?
