363. The Student Counseling Advisor System

Is It Effective or Nominal?

So, Yi-hyeon 기자2016.08.29 23:09:47

In the depth of the unemployment crisis, universities are struggling to find the way forward. One result is the Student Counseling Advisor system, which requires students in Kyungpook National University to consult with their academic advisors. Some students are satisfied with this system, while others are not. If you are curious about this institution, this article could help you to solve it.

2.     Sign in to the website-Student counseling advisor system.

3.     Apply for counseling with academic advisors.

After this process, the academic advisor will suggest a counseling schedule to the student.

Advisory formats

Face-to-face consultation is standard, but this can be modified to group counseling and other formats, according to the specific needs and availability of students and counsellors.

The system aims to help freshmen adapt to university life, make connections between students and professors, and provide advice on overall campus life. In addition, the professors can give suggestions about the students’ careers, in their roles as academic advisors. However, students should keep in mind that eight counseling sessions are required for their graduation. Failure to fulfill this requirement can delay graduation. If students do not have at least one counseling session per semester, they will not be able to access their scores for the relevant semester.

About the System

Having read the above information, you might wonder if students can choose their preferred professor as an academic advisor. Sadly, this is not possible. There are approximately 1,200 professors and 30,000 students in KNU. Therefore, the number of advisers is limited, making it extremely difficult to satisfy individual requests. However, if students want to receive advice from particular professors, they can apply separately. Contrary to counseling with the allocated professor, extra counseling with a different professor does not count as one of the 8 required counseling sessions for graduation.

Another doubt is about the condition of limiting access to one’s score. Some say counseling with the professor should not be a requirement, but should be only for development of the student. However, the problem is that students cannot check their scores in the relevant term, if they do not fulfill the counseling quota. In order to check their grades, the record of counseling sessions with the professor in charge is necessary. If the professor does not input the appropriate records, you cannot check your grades, even if you have already fulfilled the counseling requirements. You should therefore check with the professor about the input of the advising records.

How to improve the system

Even though many universities, especially most national universities, are using this system, there are some criticisms about it. First, not having any guidelines or rubrics for the advice session makes the counseling imbalanced. This can lead to a nominal system, from which students are not able to receive appropriate direction. Second, the guidance professors do not have professional qualifications in counseling. In addition, they have their own schedules of lecturing in classes and writing papers. Structurally, there are many students assigned to each professor, so it seems desirable to supplement them with professional consultants and find other methods of counseling, such as requesting a mentor on the website (http://yes.knu.ac.kr).

This system has brought a lot of issues to the fore. It gives students the opportunity to counsel with professors in same majors, but there are concerns that this is merely for appearance’s sake, as a means of addressing the low employment rate. However, students need real, substantial help, for which it is necessary to supplement this system to make it more effective.
