Most students of Kyungpook National University (KNU) will have received some text messages or emails, which provide various kinds of information regarding jobs. They are offered by the Career Development Center in KNU, which offers support for students in finding work. However, it is also true that a lot of students might not know about the facility and thus cannot utilize it. There are varied types of occupations, and all of them require different recruitment schedules and hiring specifications, making students confused. Some students have not even mapped out their own courses yet and need help to specify them. Furthermore, as finding a job becomes harder and students are getting more worried about it, it would be helpful to fully understand the Career Development Center and take advantages of it.
The Career Development Center in KNU was newly established in March, 2012, being a way of helping students prepare for a successful advance into society. Before this, the Career Development Center for female students was founded in September, 2004, and the Career Support Center and the Bureau of Student Counsel were set up in October, 2006. Then, the Career Development Center integrated these facilities in 2012, becoming an independent institution.
First of all, the Career Development Center mainly provides various programs to promote understanding about the world of work, helping students develop their own aptitude and eventually get the jobs they want. Specifically, it works on programs which help students who have not yet set their future courses. It also supports the students who have determined their goals, by providing skills, information and networks in line with their aims. In addition to the preparation for employment, the Career Development Center gathers and provides varied information about the future careers of students, graduate school advancement, and employment examinations. Furthermore, it is especially concerned about the employment of female students who are having a relatively harder time to get jobs than male students, and has added additional projects in this field.
In order to realize these fundamental notions and purposes specifically, the Career Development Center mainly introduces a lot of hiring specifications according to the time series, regional groups and industrial classification. It also provides practical training for students by holding job fairs, job camps and employment education events. Students can get more detailed information regarding the enterprises which they are really interested in via the recruiting experts of each company during these occasions. Furthermore, the Career Development Center gives all sorts of employment guidance which materially affects students who have their own aims and want to prepare for them. It also offers the personal experiences of previous seniors in their journeys to employment. Students can easily obtain guidance about the application and interview phase of the hiring. In addition, it allows students to progress in the right direction towards their career by introducing varied kinds of certificates and conditions for application which pertain to each occupation. There are some recruiting experts for various enterprises, helping students work out a practical strategy for employment. Even after being employed, students can also obtain useful information about career development and career moves. Lastly, the Career Development Center supports the lower graders by helping them to find part time jobs, tutoring, volunteer work and contest exhibits.
It is true that employment is a major worry for students these days. In order to lighten this burden, KNU established the Career Development Center to help them to find jobs. However, there has been some criticism that this facility has provided information and events that are too formal, so that it does not actually work for students. In order to make the interactions between the Career Development Center and the students more meaningful and useful, it first has to deeply understand the current world of work and offer data apposite to each case. Furthermore, students also have to be concerned about the main purpose and activity of the facility and make choices appropriate for their ultimate goals. By utilizing these, the Career Development Center will be able to aid students in finding employment and even help those who are uncertain about futures to map out their careers.
