366. Inflamed Hemorrhoids: Unwanted Friend

Kim, Dong-young, Kim, Eun-yul 기자2017.05.11 19:01:07

People nowadays are accustomed to using smartphones. According to The Korean Society of Coloproctology, 49% of Koreans tend to check smart phones on the toilet. The report says that a typical person with a smartphone in his or her hands on a toilet tends to spend more time there than a person without it. This bad habit can cause constipation and even worse, hemorrhoid. Let us learn what hemorrhoids are exactly, and how to prevent and cure them.

The term hemorrhoid has two meanings depending on the symptoms. The first meaning is the muscle used to support the anus or digestion. When it swells up or becomes inflamed, it becomes a disease called hemorrhoids, which is how we usually think of it. The early symptoms of hemorrhoids are very similar to another anus disease called fistula[1] and it is easy to be confused between these two. The causes of hemorrhoids is not very certain or specified, but it is considered that excessive pressure on the abdomen causes it. This includes long periods of sitting on the toilet, diarrhea, or in the case of a female, giving birth to a child. Fistula starts with deep stress or great physical impacts on your posterior. This creates a colorectal hole, and diarrhea or simply ‘taking a dump’ causes infections, that develops into fistula. Hemorrhoids and fistula both make the anus painful, but the fistula causes extensive pain. Furthermore, the disease hemorrhoids sometimes causes muscles to stick out of your anus. It is therefore much easier to know whether you have hemorrhoids. In the case of fistula, it is harder to detect and you can only feel the pus fillings by inserting something inside your anus.

Care for hemorrhoids

The hemorrhoid has mainly three phases. The first phase is when you feel something besides a stool inside your anus. This is usually caused by internal hemorrhoids. The second is when you can feel something coming out when you take a stool, but it goes back in right after it. In the final phase, the patient can see flesh dangling outside the anus, and only through surgery can it be taken care of. The first two can easily be cured by simple remedies and through changes in your habits. For diet, it is recommended that you drink dairy products or detox juice. The best recommended detox juice consists of spinach, apple, lemon juice and water which is good for keeping your body warm and preventing anemia or constipation. Furthermore, avoiding excessive drinking or eating late at night is highly advised. Excessive eating causes severe digestive problems, which stresses out the intestines and aggravates the patient’s symptoms. Next, it is necessary to take hip-bath at least three times a day not counting those before and after using a toilet. Taking a hip-bath means getting a bath in a special device in anus hospitals, or it can simply mean getting a hip-bath tub and using it. Here is a tip on how to use the hip-bath tub better. Do not pump air inside to the maximum but instead fill only 3/4 of the whole. Pour lukewarm water on the device and take a hipbath for 8 to 10 minutes. Hip-baths relax the muscles and allow the hemorrhoid to heal on its own. Lastly, it is important to sleep at least eight hours a day. A human’s body tends to heal faster when it rests enough, and this applies to hemorrhoids as well.

Ways to prevent hemorrhoids

As mentioned above, reducing the time spent on the toilet can relieve the anus of excessive pressure. In addition, it is helpful to eat regularly and consume appropriate amounts of plant fiber. This prevents constipation and diarrhea, which are both bad not only for hemorrhoids but also for other anus diseases. Moreover, drinking at least 1.5L of water a day improves overall digestion and stomachaches. Setting alarms to remind you to intake water regularly may help to develop the habit of drinking water. There are also activities that doctors recommend. Yoga is good for hemorrhoids because it helps strengthen the muscles. Swimming is also good because our body does not get too much influence from gravity while swimming and keeps the organs in a stable state. This helps readjustment of weight and blood that are focused on the anal region by improving blood circulation. The last recommendation is Kegel exercise which repeatedly tightens the anal sphincter and helps blood circulation near the anal canal. There is a QR code below, to help you find a video explaining how to do Kegel exercise.

Since we are living in a rapidly changing world, it seems inevitable that we must endure a stressful environment and have irregular life patterns. However, these damage both the mind and the body. Hemorrhoids and other anus related diseases will naturally occur, and if not treated with caution, they can come to you any day, so watch out for this unwanted friend!
