367. Diversity Is Our Strength

So, Yi-hyeon 기자2017.09.08 17:34:37

“To those fleeing persecution, terror and war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength.” This comment was posted on Twitter by Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada. Since Donald Trump became president of the United States on January 20, a strong anti-immigration policy has been enforced. This is a direct threat to Silicon Valley in the USA, a global IT hub, because a significant portion of the workforce in Silicon Valley consists of immigrants.

The United States has been dubbed ‘the melting pot’. This means many races are living together in one nation. A powerful anti-immigration policy has confused the whole world and has greatly affected many industries in the United States. Seven countries, including Iraq, Syria, and Iran, all of them Muslim, have become the target of restrictions from entering the United States, and their visa insurance was suspended for 90 days. This led to a strong backlash from many media outlets worldwide. The New York Times worried about the destruction of America's ideology, and the European press criticized it as racism.

Over the past few decades, agricultural and construction industries in the United States have relied on immigrants that provide cheap labor. In addition, 44 percent of Silicon Valley based companies were founded by immigrants, and 74 percent of workers aged from 25 to 44 in Silicon Valley were foreign-born workers. 40 to 50 percent of all employees of Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook are composed of various non-white races. Facebook annually publishes the ‘Diversity Report’ which is a publication detailing the gender ratio and racial composition of the entire workforce. It shows how much Facebook puts an emphasis on diversity.

In recent years, Vancouver in Canada, which is geographically close to Silicon Valley, has emerged as a second Silicon Valley. This is because of the Canadian government's positive support policy, 10 to 15 percent cheaper wages compared to those of the U.S, and accessibility to the United States, but the biggest reason for the movement is the employment visa. The visa issued by the U.S. immigration authorities allows foreign visitors to work in the United States. The number of applicants is limited to 83,000 people per year. On the other hand, the number of employment visas filed by companies in the U.S. is estimated to be over 17 million. More than half of the applicants are not able to receive visas. Therefore, many foreign workers in Silicon Valley are moving to Canada, because of the job loss crisis as a result of Trump's anti-immigrant policy. In addition, U.S.-based IT companies such as Amazon and Microsoft have already established subsidiaries and hired people in Vancouver, Canada.

While this immigration phenomenon has positive effects on expanding the economy, and increasing the creativity of individuals, there are concerns about security, unemployment, racial conflicts, and social integration costs. It is still uncertain how the policies will affect America. With regards to immigration issues, natives and foreigners are bound to have different opinions depending on their circumstances. While it is difficult to say which side is right, it is desirable to maximize the positives and minimize the negative aspects by taking on selective immigration policies.
