368. ALL ABOUT THAAD

Shin, Sang Yoo 기자2017.11.15 00:40:37

Basic Information on What We Call as THAAD

Abbreviation ’THAAD’ stands for ‘Terminal High Altitude Area Defense’, which is an American anti-ballistic missile defense system that can counter altitudes up to one hundred and fifty kilometers. The idea of building a weapon that could counter ballistic missile was first raised after 1991, experiencing the Iraqis scud missiles in the Gulf war. Unlike the previous version of anti-ballistic missiles, in which missiles were shot to change the routes of the incoming missile, ‘THAAD’ strikes down missiles by exactly targeting them.

Korean peninsula regarded as safe, mostly by Koreans -Ironic-

After the first break-out of Korean war in June 1950, Korea has been in an armistice for more than 64 years. Along the long years, Korea underwent uncountable number of provocation from North Korea. At first, constant provocation from North Korea was regarded as a very sensitive issue; But as time passed by, more and more South Koreans started to become insensitive towards them and thus, calling upon a psychological phenomenon called ‘safety frigidity.’ The extreme tension being put on Koreans simultaneously has caused the stimulus itself to be of a numb event towards the people.

There should be an action taken to solve such psychological status. This is because Korea is in a great danger whether the Koreans want to believe it or not. United Nations and the developed countries are taking precautionary measures toward North Korea economically and politically. Moreover, certain countries are showing an intention to call back their people from South Korea to ensure their safety.

What measures have Korea taken to protect its people?

Historically, although South Korean military has tried to find solutions for North Korean provocations, it has not been able to come up with proper counter measures. It was usually the American pressure that had constrained North Korea from crossing the line to engage in war. Even for the recent provocations, Korea decided to allow deploying the ‘THAAD’ to the Korean territory. Although it was an act of protecting its people, this decision to position a ‘THAAD’ in Korea has created controversial issues. Some have stated that the ‘THAAD’ system will be of no help to Korea and some have stated that it is extremely dangerous for the people living near the ‘THAAD.’

Controversies surrounding the ‘THAAD’ positioning

Some researchers have stated that the effort to protect Korea using ‘THAAD’ is unavailing because the North Korean ballistic missiles will not be able to be shot down due to its low altitude. The distance between North Korea and South Korea is too near to utilize the THAAD. Even if we could use ‘THAAD’ at its maximum potential ‘THAAD’ will only have the capacity to protect highly prioritized regions. Basically, meaning that being exempted from a highly prioritized region would directly mean in no protection from ‘THAAD.’

Moreover, ‘THAAD’ creates an area of region that emits electromagnetic waves that is very lethal to human being’s health. This was the primary reason that people who are living near the ‘THAAD’ have been going on a protest. The military has been asserting that there will be no damage done by the ‘THAAD’ because it only affects a field radius of hundred meters. However, few scientists have contrasted this by stating that it affects a filed radius of three kilometers. Since the positioning of ‘THAAD’ directly affects their family, more and more people are becoming outraged because of the positioning of ‘THAAD.’

Damage undergone after the ‘THAAD’ incident

After Korea, had accepted the proposal by America to position a ‘THAAD’ in Korea, Korea has been extremely damaged economically by China’s policy. Long before Korea had accepted the proposal, China constantly warned South Korea from accepting America’s proposal. But after her acceptance, China has initiated propagandas to boycott Korean products. The first impact was struck on the tourist industry. Korea lost almost eight hundred thousand Chinese and eleven trillion won. Then it moved on to firms in China. Lotte went through nine hundred million won loss with seventy-nine stores being closed. Moreover, Hyundai had to stop all its supply chain due to one of its co-partners deciding to quit manufacturing components of the car.
