368. Create Your Space in YouTube

Jang, Min-young, Kim, Ah-young 기자2017.11.16 15:47:38

YouTube is an online hub of contents that spreads culture worldwide, entertains viewers, and helps gather information easily. As the digital content industry expands and as more people dive into the field as a career, the contents are becoming more diverse and professional. In addition, there are new jobs derived from YouTube creators; advising creators on how to become successful, educating them on producing and editing or managing creators’ channels are some examples. The growing popularity and impact of this on other fields makes people wonder about the details of this job.

Pros & Cons to Becoming a Professional Contents Creator

The job of YouTube contents creator has low entry barriers. It does not require professional skills or a degree. Anyone who lives in a country in which a YouTube Partner Program is provided can upload videos. In other words, this is a competitive industry, which means there are countless competitors with similar contents.

Creators have absolute freedom over the content. This freedom allows creators to freely express their personality and opinions. However, it can be very challenging to come up with something unique and entertaining at the same time. Contents also must abide by the law and copyrights.

No initial capital is necessary to start the business. It is possible to film with a cellphone and to edit using a free program. However, most professional creators use highly advanced shooting equipment including cameras and lighting. In addition, although professional skills are not required, the ability to edit helps make a more organized video and attracts more viewers.

How Is Profit Made?

In order to make profits, creators should meet three requirements. First, a creator should live in a country where a YouTube Partner Program is available. Second, the public views on one’s channel should add up to at least 10,000. Lastly, once a channel reaches the minimum views and once creators join the YouTube Partner Program, YouTube reviews the content for content conformity to YouTube Partner Program policies, YouTube’s Terms of Service, and the Community Guidelines.

There are some ways to earn money on YouTube. When viewers click on the displayed advertisements or watch them for a certain range of time, profit is produced and is split between the creator and YouTube. Uploading a paid content or making a paid channel is another way to make profit. Viewers purchase videos or pay a subscription fee for a paid channel. To make paid contents or channels, creators are required to meet another set of criteria such as reaching a minimum of 1000 subscribers. Another way of making a profit is through Product Placement (PPL) advertisements, which are more likely to be offered to famous creators. Creators show the products in their videos and get paid for indirect advertising by the advertiser.

Helping Hands to Creators

Many YouTube creators need sponsors to make high quality videos. The first sponsor is YouTube, which is open to all creators. There are benefit programs for every step of the way as the creator’s channel grows.

The second way to get a sponsor is by joining a Multi-Channel Network (MCN). MCNs are third-party service providers that offer assistance to a channel owner in various areas such as audience development, content programming, creator collaborations, digital rights management, monetization, and sales. Joining an MCN is an important decision for YouTube creators, so they should understand that they will exchange a part of their profits. Since there are a lot of positive possibilities in the Korea YouTube market, there are many choices of MCNs.

Beauty Creator SSIN NIM, with 130 Million Subscribers

As an example of a successful contents creator, ssin (씬님) is well known as a beauty YouTuber with over 130 million subscribers. She posts various videos, covering topics such as celebrities’ makeup, costume, or video blogs of her normal life. In the beginning, she started uploading videos on YouTube just for fun. When she was a ChungAng university graphic arts student, she usually posted her make-up tips on her blog, casted to a TV show, published a book, and then started to upload videos filmed with her phone onto YouTube. For the first year since she started, she could not generate any profits, so she did a lot of part-time jobs at that time. Despite the difficulties, she kept trying to find things to improve herself, and those efforts made opportunities. With a famous YouTube channel, consistent profits come from YouTube advertisements, and others come from collaboration advertisements with cosmetics brands. Although she is a beauty creator, makeup skills are not the only required ability for becoming a successful creator. She has to spend most of her time planning for new contents and editing. Now she is perfectly settled as one of the most famous Korean YouTubers.

Broadcasting involves numerous hands of a producer director, scriptwriter, lighting director, video editor, graphic director and so on. However, a YouTube creator has to perform those jobs all alone, given that there is no sponsor. Becoming a YouTube creator is not as easy as watching videos. Making something people will recognize and want to see is not an easy job. If you are considering becoming a creator, there are a lot of advisors and chances, but also a lot of obstacles you have to overcome!
