Nowadays it is common to visit portal sites such as Google, Naver, Nate, Daum, etc. We can see headline news there, as well as getting easy-to-access information. Recently, these sites have added many e-mail services, cafés, blogs, and even digital dictionaries to help us get information. These multipurpose portal sites have made our everyday lives more convenient. According to research resulted by rankey.com (www.rankey.com), 95% of Korean netizens use these portal sites in their daily lives. However, there is more.

Recently, big news related to portal sites, has taken center place in an issue of heated debate. The most dominant portal site in Korea, called Naver, is suspected of delivering distorted news reports, in particular with relation to politics and real estimate policy. It seems that, a number of conservative supporters became executives of NHN, which takes charge of this portal site. Moreover they prevented netizens from discussing political news. (Reported by mediatoday.co.kr) They also deliberately rearranged and distorted news and even deleted it if it doesn’t fit their political purposes.

Especially in this presidential period, many Korean netizens are sensitive about this problem. Those who are aware of this fact are extremely concerned about it. Some are insisting on a boycott of certain websites and are spread this action on the Internet. They argue that these sites are blocking freedom of speech, just as other kinds of mass media do.

In fact, this is not the first time that portal sites have abused their ‘digital power.’ Some of the portal sites regularly block the hyperlinks displayed in other portal sites (reported in the daily economy news, www.mk.co.kr, 2005). This sort of action limits the variety and objectiveness of information and impairs web-searching ability.

Of course, many people still use these portal sites. We will continue to be influenced by this distorted information until we stop to use them, especially for news items. Although it is hard to stop using such convenient Internet tools, we must be aware that we are being misled by them.
