Comments & Suggestions on No.327

By Kim, Sang-hyun (Dept. of Classical Chinese, Junior) 기자2008.05.01 14:14:27

The new government is pouring out reforms to the nations" English education policy, and because of this, the issue of learning the English language has became a matter of common interest to most students. When preparing to review the articles of edition No.327, I realized that many students in KNU are being influenced by the new policy. Many have applied to review The KNU Times, and as an enthusiastic reader and one of those applicants, I am very happy to have an opportunity to offer some comments.

Firstly, it is really good news that The KNU Times has been reborn with a 36-page magazine. School newspapers play an important role in helping students know more about campus life in addition to providing opinions on current issues. All of the news items in edition No.327 were like sea of information to me, providing full of new and various ideas. For instance, the articles, "Mystery of color," "United, we stand; Divided, we fall" and "For your Rest: Restree," have become subjects of conversation among my friends.

In the section of "People", as an alumnus working in journalism, Ryu Hee-lim said, "Do not concern about your religion and improve your ability." This is well related to the section "Cover story." With six pages, the "KNU 2010 Global 100" article showed us many aspects of plans of that project. The relative ranking of international universities and schools was also evaluated objectively, based on researchers of repute in various academic fields, along with the percentage of international faculties and students. Being ranked as a top global university shows that the university has achieved international competitive power and influence. To spur the development of KNU, enforcing the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and other plans are helpful and somewhat idealistic projects. However, we might wonder whether our school is leaping into this project quickly, without considering the welfare of its students. Could it be that this is in fact an attempt to demonstrate the schools" ambitions? Surely, nobody will know the global rank of KNU in the year 2010, when it comes. The important thing to remember is that "Haste makes waste." Slow and steady planning will improve the quality of our school just as much as being a top ranking global university.

Another very popular section of edition No.327 among my friends was the section called "gourmet in Daegu". In this section, we could find famous places such as the one offering the Dr. Fish service. It was an up-to-date topic and I planned to visit the cafe at once. However, I saw (by chance) a TV program about the dangers of the Dr. Fish service. If Someone has a wound on the foot, it can be infected with a virus. It also seems that the Dr. Fish equipments are from China the original Dr. Fish can"t be imported into Korea. If I hadn’t watched the TV program, I might have regretted it later. The KNU Times needs to look at all sides of the issue when offering information.

The KNU Times expresses its point of view in a simple and direct manner, which makes it easy to read. However, I suggest that reporters add more exciting, witty, and ironic words into their repertoire, in order to catch the reader"s attention. In my opinion, this would enhance the quality of the magazine and would help the readers. Undoubtedly, The KNU Times has its own unique style and is filled with passion. I hope that it will also become more and attract more regular subscribers.

In conclusion, I am really happy to be reviewing the lovely reborn magazine. If you consider my opinion to be of value, I will be even happier. I really like the layout of the paper because it is eye-catching, and the fresh visual effects were impressive. I"m looking forward to no.328 of The KNU Times.
